ねらいと目標 The goal of the class is to explore the rise of cuteness, a popular aesthetic that is undergoing a major boom in today’s globalized world. By studying the beginnings of cute culture in 19th century North America and its expansion during the early 20th century, we will understand how changes in Western society made cuteness capture the spirit of the age. Goals also include understanding how gender and race influenced the cute aesthetic from its earliest manifestations.
内容 “Cuteness in American Culture”
We will explore the rise of the cute aesthetic in Western culture with a focus on American culture in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century. The class will concentrate on the rise of mass consumer culture from a gendered perspective, and the Edwardian golden age of children’s literature. We will cover cuteness in literature from major writers such as Emily Dickinson to minor writers like Lydia Sigourney. We will also study cuteness in film, concentrating on child actors like Shirley Temple; popular works that became early multi-media phenomenon such as Frank L. Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz; cute illustrations and comics in periodicals and newspapers; and early animation including Disney.
テキスト Reading/viewing material will consist of selected short essays and videos. The format of the class is lecture and discussion. There are no textbooks for this class.
