ねらいと目標 The aim of this course is to develop our ability to communicate in English. We will work together to build a community based on mutual respect, sharing our interests, listening to and learning from one another.
The course aims to help you gain more confidence in listening and speaking English.
内容 Confidence and mutual respect is essential in communication. Communication depends on one's willingness to share and listen.

View at least one TED talk (including TED-Ed series @ https://www.ted.com/watch/ted-ed) or read an article on current issues to report on the following week in writing and/or in small groups.
You will share your interests and discuss topics of choice each week, starting with exchanging your news over the week.

Instead of handing in assignments in the classroom, all writing assignments and feedback for others' presentations are to be submitted through WebClass.

In addition to a brief individual presentation and a collaborative project, you will work on giving a term presentation towards the end of the semester.

You will learn more from one another rather than from one instructor. Surprise yourself by how much you can contribute!
テキスト Materials and links will be shared on WebClass, so please check it regularly.

None in particular, but go to https://www.ted.com/topics/presentation or check YouTube for TED talks that interest you, for example, by finding key subjects to focus on throughout the semester. Access famous speeches online to learn from (ex. https://www.history.com/speeches or https://www.americanrhetoric.com/speechbank.htm). Build vocabulary to discuss relevant issues.
Make your recommendations of TED talks and speeches a week ahead to discuss together!

Please bring possible topics to explore and discuss throughout the semester. Be ready to share these topics the first week (onward).
参考文献 Necessary materials will be shared depending on the direction our meetings go.
Let us use Teams and WebClass to share materials with one another, if any of you find interesting and/or relevant articles, links, websites, and so on!
成績評価方法 Your grade depends on attendance and participation--including reading news articles, viewing TED talks and video clips, or listening to speeches before each meeting, coming prepared to share your topics for daily conversation, and working in small groups, project-related or not--(60%), individual presentation (5%), and the term project to present, individually or collaboratively (35%).
Giving feedback to others is as significant as the presentation itself.

In order to participate fully, please don't forget to have your English-Japanese and Japanese-English (and more ideally, English-English) dictionary handy for each meeting!

Don't miss more than 5 classes. Remember also that being late 3 times will amount to 1 absence. You can always contact me through Teams (or Portal) if there are issues out of your control that I need to be aware of.
授業スケジュール(展開計画) This is a tentative syllabus and subject to change, especially depending on coronavirus conditions.
There will be a collaborative presentation to work on in class to get a taste of what is expected for the term project.
For a brief individual presentation in the first weeks, some options are as follows:
1. Choose a topic that matters to you and share it with us in any way (to educate/promote/entertain/introduce).
2. Show and tell, where you bring an item that tells us something about yourself and talk about it.
3. Introduce a quote and give a brief context in which to appreciate its significance.
It can be a lyric, poem, a line or a passage from your favorite book, film, show, manga, or (part of) a speech that you find inspiring. If it is not originally in English, please translate it (which process I am glad to help out). Tell us why you chose this quote to recite.
